Four letters put together to make one small word, and yet this one small word can change so much of our life experience. I think of a friend of mine who is now waiting for the birth of her second child and how much hope there is wrapped up in her thoughts and actions and expectations. How about young lovers who are filled with the excitement of being together, planning their future, sharing their dreams. Though we don’t always quantify it, hope is part of most of our daily lives… even when hope is dashed and we are feeling hopeless, hope is there waiting in the wings to once again connect with us.
Hope comes in so many sizes from the hope of good weather to a chance of a new job or relationship or even the future of a nation. Hope is often underutilized, understated or even left out altogether. Hope often times is paired with love walking hand in hand… in fact hope I think is one of the primary natures of love. I guess we could say that “I hope for you” instead of “I love you” in many situations.
My hope ebbs and flows just like everyone else, there are times when it is easy to hope and others when hoping seems hopeless. But maybe hope’s greatest legacy is in the future… hope eternal, that the ups and downs the pinnacles and valleys and all the points on the scale between are not measured in graphs and charts or in gains or losses of material goods but rather the hope that in eternity finally we will rest, because hope will finally bear it’s fruit!
