I would imagine at this point most everyone has heard about this case in Florida and the “Stand your Ground Law”. Not only have we heard about it, but as is the case so many times with these kinds of incidents, the facts are incomplete at best and change depending on who you listen to.
It always amazes me how many people so far removed from a situation are ready to pass judgement on an incident based on media hyperbole, lets face it not just legal infractions but politics, sports, Hollywood etc. We hear something based on what we are told, often don’t question the veracity of the report and began a process of developing our opinion and then at times even argue various points based on those opinions as if they were facts.
The pundits on talk radio and in the news media fill the airwaves continuously stirring up emotion and ideologies because it makes for great ratings, meanwhile in the midst of this tragic story there are thousands of others occurring every moment of the day that will never get attention. Because we are by and large anesthetized to so much of the tragedy in the world around us our apathy has increased and our empathy has decreased.
I don’t know what really happened in Florida, but a boy is dead and countless lives are changed forever because of it. God help us.
